Family Letter

-->
December 18, 2012

Dear Broadus Wood Families,

The tragic events of December 14 in Newtown, Connecticut have affected us all.  This unfortunate incident is a reminder that we must continue to bond together as a community and seek positive ways to ensure the safety and well-being of all of our children.

The Broadus Wood staff spent yesterday focused on providing every child with the most normal day possible and will continue to do so for the remainder of the week.  The staff reported that the majority of students have made no mention of the events on Friday.  In the few instances when students made mention of this tragic event, teachers felt comfortable addressing their concerns and making students feel safe.

I want to assure all of our Broadus Wood families that we take the safety of our students very seriously. We have a crisis team in place that reviews our plan regularly and addresses areas of concern.  I have heard from some of you and appreciate your insights, suggestions and concerns.  We are all responsible for the safety of our children and our team, along with the division, will be using your feedback to make improvements.

In addition, I want to remind all of you what a large role you play in helping make our school safe.  By following the routines and procedures that Broadus Wood families do, you make it possible for us to identify any behavior that is not typical and may warrant our attention.  For example, checking into the office when you visit, providing notes for changes in dismissal plans, waiting until 7:45 a.m. to drop off your child and following traffic rules helps us maintain an orderly environment.

Broadus Wood is honored that you entrust us every day with your child.  Safety always has been and always will be our foremost concern so we can provide the quality learning experiences that all students deserve.

Sincerely,
Kendra Core King

New Lunch Payment Options

Dear Albemarle School Parents and Guardians:

We would like to introduce you to a new option in our payment system for student meals that will make it more convenient for you to fund your account and also allow you to monitor all purchases.

Starting today, you can establish an online account for one or more children.  For a small convenience fee, you will be able to use a VISA, Master Card or Discover credit card or a debit card to add money to your child’s account.  You also will be able to program your account to alert you when it reaches a low balance and to automatically provide funds on a regular basis or when the balance reaches a certain limit.  Confirmation e-mails will be sent when a deposit is made.

This new capability is being provided by mySchoolBucks.com in partnership with our office.  For more information and to set up your account, visit http://www.mySchoolBucks.com and register using the “Start Here” link on the right side of the page.  An e-mail will be sent with a link for completing your registration and for setting up your account.

Please note that this is an additional option for making payments.  Parents still may need to send cash or a check to their child’s school cafeteria.

We are pleased to be able to offer families this new opportunity to manage one of the most important purchases their children make every day.  I invite you to take advantage of this new service.

Broadus Wood Family Update
December 2012

Dear Broadus Wood Families,

This is the December edition of enhanced monthly communications from Mrs. King about programs, initiatives, and updates at our school.  The provided information can also be found on our school’s website under the principal’s page and will be sent to your email address, too.  Families will continue to receive school communications in the format of monthly phone calls/emails, quarterly newsletters, Monday Backpack Express, and postings to the school’s website.

Upcoming Changes for the 2013-2014
1.     Redistricting: Albemarle County Public Schools families will have the opportunity to review and comment upon options for the possible redistricting and reconfigurations of some elementary schools in the northern and western portions of the county at a public meeting next week. The meeting will be held on Monday, December 10, at Agnor-Hurt Elementary School meetings at 6:30 p.m. Josh Davis will speak at our King’s Coffee on December 14, 2012.
2.     12th Annual Golden Apple Awards Ceremony: is for outstanding teachers from our school systems.  These awards are presented to faculty members from the public and private schools in Albemarle County and City of Charlottesville including CATEC. Golden Apple Award is a means of selecting and honoring some of our outstanding teachers. Teachers are most important in nurturing our children’s inquisitive minds and preparing them for the challenges of the future. Nominate a teacher and show your appreciation and support! Nomination forms are available from the local schools or online at www.betterlivingvirginia.com or www.k12albemarle.org
