February 2013 Family Update

Broadus Wood Family Update
February 2013

Dear Broadus Wood Families,

This is the February edition of enhanced monthly communications from Mrs. King about programs, initiatives, and updates at our school.  The provided information can also be found on our school’s website under the principal’s page and also will be sent to your email address.  Families will continue to receive school communications in the format of monthly phone calls/emails, quarterly newsletters, Monday Backpack Express, and postings to the school’s website.

Upcoming Changes for the 2013-2014
1.     Redistricting: On January 23, the Agnor-Hurt Redistricting committee presented the following recommendations to Superintendent Dr. Pam Moran:
Unanimous (10-0) recommendations to redistrict Agnor-Hurt Elementary School, as follows:
  • Woodlands/Earlysville Rd to Broadus Wood (46 students) + Northfield/Huntington to Woodbrook (20 students) + Squirrel Ridge and Townwood to Greer (28 students) = 94 students.
  • Grandfather clause: All rising fifth-graders and their siblings are permitted to stay at Agnor-Hurt for one year only (2013-14), but they must provide their own transportation or use an existing Agnor-Hurt bus stop, if capacity allows.
Unanimous (10-0) recommendations to redistrict students at the middle school level, as follows:
  • Redistrict Northfield/Huntington to Jouett in order to prevent a new split feeder pattern at Woodbrook.
  • Grandfather clause: All rising seventh- and eighth-graders are permitted to stay at Burley until they complete middle school, but they must provide their own transportation or use an existing Burley bus stop, if capacity allows.
Contested (9-1) recommendation concerning redistricting at the middle school level:
  • Crenshaw/Triangle Ct. remain at Jouett, which maintains status quo and addresses public feedback
Dr. Moran will present recommendations to the school board based on the committee’s input during the February school board meeting.  The recommendation involving our school in each option is for an additional 46 students to transfer to Broadus Wood.  The school board will have a public hearing in March.  I will continue to forward more redistricting information as it becomes available.
Current Updates

4.     Math Communication Update: Our Math Night in December was a great success.  Broadus Wood wants to continue to communicate about math with families.  Therefore, as a school:
a.     At the beginning of each math unit, every grade level will share what students will learn in math through a note, website, Investigation Letter Home, or a newsletter.
b.     We will host Math in Action on Thursday, March 7.  Math in Action is an invitation for parents to visit their child’s class during their math lesson to gain a deeper understanding of the various methods used.  Parents will be able to join in the learning by participating with the class as they problem solve, work with fluency, and practice math through various games and activities.  The event will take place during your child’s regular math time. The times are as follows:
Kindergarten- 12:30pm           Third Grade- 9:15am
First Grade- 8:00am               Fourth Grade- 10:45am
